Heliconia's don't typically survive in northern California, mostly because it can go below freezing in the winter here. Kim took a chance and bought one two years ago (we had to take a trip to a nursery near San Diego to buy it). I guess we've been having mild winters because it flowered this year.
Since the flower is in a slightly challenging area to access in the yard and surrounded by distracting elements, I waited until night and then used light painting to make this image.
