World Lion Day

Today, August 10th is World Lion Day; celebrated to raise awareness about the importance of Lion conservation. There is good news and bad news with populations rebounding in southern Africa, especially in the conservation zones. The Asiatic Lion is also rebounding with conservation efforts in Gujarat, India. The story in western and central Africa is not great however with the population continuing to decline and in threat of local extinction. This old male is a Kalahari Desert Lion, located in a preserve in South Africa.
