This is one of my favorite images made in South Georgia. It shows not only the incredible wildlife but also the amazing landscape. This image was made on an early morning landing at Saint Andrew's Bay. We had landed shortly after 5:45AM that morning and though I had only gotten about 5 hours of sleep the night before, it was absolutely worth it. The skies were clear and the light was wonderful but it only lasted about an hour. Shortly after 7, clouds started to cover the peaks and within 15 minutes we were under a blanket of cloud for the rest of the day. In all my years of waking up at crazy hours to photograph, I haven't regretted the loss of sleep even once, even those times I've been skunked.
I made this image as were walking to the main colony site. It was hard to leave the area and continue to the main colony as King Penguins would keep crossing the stream making for interesting photography.
