Eerie Woods

Eerie Woods - Hasselblad 907x, 50mm, f/12, 256s, ISO 100.

I made this image almost exactly a year ago and it’s the result of wildfire smoke, coastal fog and a bit of creativity. When driving back from dinner with our Bandon workshop group, I saw how these trees were covered in dense fog and so I grabbed my camera and went out into the night. The human eye isn’t great at sensing color at night, so it wasn’t until I started working with the camera I noticed the orange from the smoke. I tried to find trees with interesting shapes (a challenge in the dark) and put a flashlight behind to add some color contrast. Several experiments later, this is the result.
